January 6 - 17, 2020: Building Inspection Scheduled, State Fire Marshal Inspection Callouts
Posted December 10, 2019 @ 9:24 a.m.:
Starting January 6, 2020 through January 17, 2020, the Office of State Fire Marshal (SFM) will perform Building Inspections for the following Campus buildings in the order listed below. Facilities would like to partner with our Building Coordinators to help us pass along the message to raise awareness of the most common violations.
Below is the list of common violations and how to avoid them. The Fire and Life Safety Manager, David Abordo, will be escorting the Fire Marshal, and they will be inspecting every room in each building. As a courtesy heads up, we would like to give all building occupants adequate time in advance to look out for these potential violations. Work orders may be submitted if assistance is needed from Facilities Services.
- Administration
- Library
- Cesar Chavez Student Center
- Creative Arts
- Fine Arts
- Burk Hall
- Ethnic Studies/Psychology
- Student Health Center
- Student Service Building
- Humanities
Here is a list of common violations which should be corrected prior to the SFM Inspections:
- Daisy Chaining Power Strips: Power strips are widely used in households and offices. Much of the time they are used because there are not enough outlets to meet the electrical demand. The proper use of a power strip usually does not cause a hazard. It’s the improper use that can cause safety issues, such as creating a potential electrical failure and/or a possible fire hazard. An example of using power strips unsafely is when they are “daisy chained” together.
- Alternatives to Daisy Chaining: The Office of Compliance gave several safe solutions in place of daisy chaining power strips and extension cords. These included:
- Replace a power strip with a power cord of adequate length to reach an outlet.
- Move equipment or desks or whatever needs electrical power closer to existing outlets.
- Choose the appropriate kind of power strip that will meet the electrical power needs.
- If possible and feasible, add more outlets to meet the electrical power needs.
- Alternatives to Daisy Chaining: The Office of Compliance gave several safe solutions in place of daisy chaining power strips and extension cords. These included:
- Storage Ceiling Clearance: All storage, regardless of the type, shall be kept at least 24 inches below a ceiling in non-sprinklered areas and at least 18 inches below the ceiling in sprinklered areas of the building (IFC 315 3.1)
- Solution: Reduce storage ceiling clearance to 24 inches below ceiling or 18 inches below fire sprinkler heads
- Solution: Reduce storage ceiling clearance to 24 inches below ceiling or 18 inches below fire sprinkler heads
- Means of Egress: Combustible material shall not be stored in exit or enclosures for stairways and ramps.(IFC 315.3.2)
- Solution: Remove all combustible material
- Solution: Remove all combustible material
- Storage in Equipment/Electrical Rooms: Combustible material shall not be stored in boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, elevator rooms, or electrical equipment rooms. (IFC 315.3.3).
- Solution: Remove all combustible material
- Solution: Remove all combustible material
- Space/Portable Heaters: SFSU is permitted to prohibit use of portable electric heaters in occupancies or situations where such use or operation would present an undue danger to life or property. Portable electric heaters shall be designed and located so that they cannot be easily overturned. (NFPA 1 Section 11.5.3)
- Solution: Replace space/portable heater with tip-over protection switch
