Storm Preparedness and Safety Reminders

Storms can bring heavy rain, strong winds, and other hazardous conditions. We kindly remind all faculty, staff, and building occupants to keep windows closed during inclement weather. Doing so helps protect university property from potential damage while ensuring that our campus buildings remain secure, warm, and comfortable for everyone.
Proper actions can prepare you for an emergency, reduce the risk of property damage, and keep you and the campus community safe:
- Never drive into flooded areas. A foot of water will float many vehicles; two feet can sweep away a truck.
- Beware of the potential for falling limbs and trees where you walk, drive, and park. Watch for flying objects and debris. Bring in unsecured objects.
- Always be prepared for temporary power outages that could result.
- Don’t approach downed power lines, as this could be an electrocution hazard; report immediately to 9-1-1.
- Strong winds can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Use extra caution while driving.
- Leave the building/area when officials tell you to evacuate.

State Fire Marshal Building Inspection | Fine Arts (2/18/25)

Update: Scheduled Central Heating Outage – Admin (Feb. 10, 2025 from 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.)

The tie-in of the new heating hot water supply and return lines in the Administration Building is now complete. We are currently in the process of refilling the system and working to fully restore the central heating system to the Administration building. All systems are expected to be functioning as intended by this afternoon.

Capital Planning, Design and Construction (CPDC), is working with DPR Construction and Axis Mechanical to tie in the new heating hot water supply and return lines in the Administration Building. As part of this project, a scheduled heating hot water shutdown is necessary. The central heating in the Administration Building will be unavailable on Monday, February 10, 2025, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Please note: Domestic hot and cold water in restrooms and sinks will not be affected by this shutdown.

Notice: Elevator Outage in Science Engineering Innovation Center (SEIC)

Please be advised that the two main passenger elevators in the Science Engineering Innovation Center (SEIC) are currently out of service until further notice. In the meantime, the service elevator located on the north side of the building remains operational and can be used as an alternative, but a keycard is required.
Facilities Services is actively coordinating repairs with TKE Elevator. We will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available regarding the status and expected timeline for repairs.

Administration Building Supply Fan Replacement (Feb. 10–14, 2025)

Facilities is working with ACCO a third-party contractor, to replace supply fans in the Administration building. This work is scheduled to begin on Monday February 10, 2025, and is expected to be completed by Friday, February 14, 2025.
- Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
During this period, you may experience occasional noise and contractors will be transporting materials through the building and using the elevators. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we complete this essential upgrade.

Update: Notice of Domestic Hot Water Shutdown | Campus-Wide

The domestic supply pump issue in the central plant has been repaired, and domestic hot water service has been restored campus-wide.
Please note that discolored water may be present due to sediment in the lines following the restoration process. We recommend running sinks until the water runs clear.

Facilities is actively working to address the issue. At this time, there is no estimated time for repairs, but we will provide additional updates as soon as they become available. Please note that central heating and domestic cold water remain unaffected.

- The domestic hot water in restrooms is currently unavailable.

- All campus buildings except for Housing buildings, which are not impacted.

Our team is working diligently to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and will provide updates if there are any changes to the timeline.

Please be advised that a temporary central heating shutdown is scheduled for the Business Building on Friday, January 31, 2025, starting at 3:00 p.m. This shutdown is needed to repair a heating valve leak in BUS 318. Facilities anticipates restoring central heating to the Business Building by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Additional information will be provided once available.

State Fire Marshal Building Inspection | GYM Friday, January 17, 2025

This is a reminder that the State Fire Marshal (SFM) inspection of the Gymnasium is taking place today, Friday, January 17, 2025, from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The inspection will include all rooms, with access required to both the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Please be advised that the natural gas shutdown previously planned for (Wednesday, January 15, 2025 – Friday, January 17, 2025), has been re-scheduled and will now take place today, January 14, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. We apologize for the short notice and appreciate your understanding. The vendor is moving quickly to complete the necessary repairs, and we anticipate that today’s shutdown will be sufficient, with no additional outages expected.
This shutdown is vital to repair an underground gas leak between the Student Health Center, Burk Hall, and the Student Services Building walkway. During this time, the outage will affect central heating and all gas-powered appliances in the following buildings:
- Student Health Center
- Burk Hall
- Student Services Building
- Cesar Chavez Student Center

A temporary shutdown of domestic cold water took place today for Marcus Hall to allow for necessary repairs to the Backflow Preventer. The repair work has been successfully completed, and domestic cold water service was restored at approximately 10:50 a.m.

Please be advised that domestic hot water service to all affected buildings was restored on December 24, 2024.
The buildings that were impacted by this outage include:
- Humanities
- Mashouf Wellness Center
- West Grove Commons
- Village at Centennial Square (Buildings A, B, and C)
Facilities Services is coordinating with Express Plumbing to complete additional repairs. The following work is scheduled:
- Monday, January 6, 2025: Insulation installation for the replaced section of pipe between Humanities and Village.
- Tuesday, January 7, 2025: Backfilling and concrete pouring between Humanities and Village.
