Crane Work - Hensill Hall - Thursday December 21, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Capital Planning Design and Construction (CPDC) is working with contractors JUV and Bragg Crane to replace HVAC equipment on the roof of Hensill Hall. The crane lift will take place on Thursday, December 21, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., and the crane will be staged behind the GYM at 7:30 a.m.

CPDC has partnered with Environment Health and Safety (EHS) to obtain the necessary permits.  JUV will be working between December 21st through January 5th replacing the chiller for the Animal Quarters.

The following areas will be blocked off and unavailable for the duration of this work:

  • All parking areas behind Thornton Hall
  • All parking areas behind Hensill Hall
  • The areas as indicated on the map behind GYM

Please note that no occupants will be allowed in the 6th floor, 7th floor, and 8th floor of Hensill Hall during the crane lift.

CPDC and contractors will be on-site to help with the evacuation process. The crane work will only start when it’s safe to do so.

Winter Break Closure – Securing Campus Offices/Buildings

In preparation for the Winter Break campus closure, Facilities is sharing important reminders for all staff, faculty, and administrators in preparation for leaving our offices/buildings for an extended period of time. Before you leave for the break, please do the following:

  • Close and lock all windows to prevent damage from inclement weather, and close window blinds for security. 
  • Power off all portable heaters, computers, monitors, printers, and power strips; and unplug all non-mission-critical appliances.
  • Lock up laptops in lockable drawers or overhead bins if you are leaving them on campus. Do not leave them on desks, even if there is a docking station. 
  • Lock up sensitive/confidential material. Do not leave work exposed on/around your desk.
  • Empty and clean all food containers and remove any perishable items from refrigerators.
  • Avoid discarding food and perishable items in trash cans inside your office/building on the eve of the campus closure. These may cause unpleasant smells and invite unwelcome pests. If you have food to discard, use trash cans and compost bins located outside of campus buildings.
  • Turn off all lights. 
  • Close and lock all office doors and double-check that all doors are locked if you are the last person to leave.

Please note, no Facilities maintenance work is scheduled to take place during the Winter Break, excluding projects. The central heating and ventilation will remain on, and Building Service Engineers will be on campus through break monitoring the central plant, campus buildings, and mechanical rooms periodically.  Paint shop employees will likewise be conducting graffiti monitoring.

The Facilities Services Customer Service Center (CSC) will be operating on a modified schedule during the Winter Break. The physical office will be closed, and service representatives will be available via phone and email during the dates and times indicated below:

  • Friday 12/22/2023 to Sunday 12/24/23 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • Monday 12/25/2023: CLOSED***
  • Tuesday 12/26/2023 to Sunday 12/31/2023 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • Monday 1/1/2024: CLOSED***

*On days in which the CSC is fully closed, phone calls will be forwarded to the University Police Department (UPD) and service requests submitted via the portal may be reviewed intermittently.  For routine service requests, please submit a service request online.

Creative Arts - DCW Shutdown | Monday, 12/18/23 from 7:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

During the repair time listed above, the restrooms in Creative Arts with be closed and unavailable for use.

Brief Electrical Shutdown | Wednesday 12/13/23 at 5:30 a.m. (ADM, LIB)

Please be advised that Facilities has scheduled a brief electrical-shutdown on Wednesday 12/13/23 at 5:30 a.m. for approximately 5 minutes. This shutdown is needed to transfer loads between B and A on the 12kV main switch-gear.  Facilities electricians will be on-site for the duration of this process.

The following buildings will be affected by this brief shutdown.

  • Administration
  • Library

To minimize any potential damage or data loss we kindly request that all occupants take the following measures:

  • Turn off Computers and Electronic Devices: Please ensure that all computers, and other electronic devices are powered down before the scheduled outage begins.  This precaution will help prevent any power surges or damage to the equipment once the power is restored.
  • Safely Save and Close Work: Prior to shutting down your devices, remember to save all your work and close any open applications.  This will prevent any unsaved data from being lost during this brief outage.
  • Unplug important Appliances: If you have any sensitive electrical appliances, we recommend unplugging them as an extra precaution to avoid potential power fluctuations.

Electrical & Central Heating Outage (CP, WM, FH GYM) - 11/7/23 from 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

Facilities has scheduled a brief electrical shutdown on Tuesday, 11/7/23 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. affecting the Central Plant, GYM Field house, and Waste Management.  This shutdown is necessary for contractor SBAY to install a new circuit breaker in the central plant. 

This will briefly impact power in the above mentioned buildings and the central heating to the main campus, and we expect minimal impact due to the short duration of the shutdown.

Fine Arts - Central Heating Shutdown

Please be advised that a temporary central heating shutdown in the Fine Arts Building is currently in placeThis shutdown is necessary to replace a leaking heat exchanger in the basement of new Fine Arts Building. We expect to have the central heating up and running again by 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

During this brief shutdown, occupants of the building are unlikely to notice any significant temperature changes.

GYM 121 Pool - Maintenance

This morning, our Facilities Building Service Engineers performed a treatment on the GYM pool to eliminate phosphates. This treatment is non-toxic and is part of our regular maintenance to prevent algae growth and phosphate build-up.

The GYM pool is available and safe to use, but the water may appear cloudy during the removal process. We expect the water to clear up by this afternoon, and Facilities will continue to monitor the pool throughout the day.

Capital Planning Design and Construction (CPDC) has scheduled a power shutdown for Campus on Thursday, September 28th, 2023, from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. This shutdown is necessary to install new high-voltage cables and a circuit breaker on the Central Plant. This operation is part of ongoing electrical repairs in the Central Plant. The contractors involved in this work are SBAY and RAY SCHEIDTS ELECTRIC. Facilities will assist CPDC and contractors as needed. The contractor will make all attempts to minimize disruption.

Please be advised that the 3rd floor exterior sliding doors at Hensill Hall are out of service. The sliding doors have been secured and labeled with caution tape. As an alternative ADA option, please use the 2nd floor west side ADA-accessible doors facing Thornton Hall.

A service call is scheduled with a 3rd party contractor to determine the extent of the repairs and order parts, as necessary.

Domestic-Cold Water Shutdown | Mashouf Wellness Center

Facilities has reached out to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to assist with an underground water leak issue in front of the Mashouf Wellness Center (MWC). Please be advised that the domestic-cold water to the Mashouf Wellness Center will be shutdown until further notice. This emergency shutdown is required to prevent any damage to mechanical room equipment while SFPUC addresses this active leak.

Thornton Hall | Elevators - Out of Service

Early this morning, a breaker that feeds the automatic transfer switch (ATS) tripped and caused some electrical issues in the Thornton Hall building affecting the main power feed to the elevators.

Because of this, all elevators in Thornton Hall are out of service and not available for use until these issues are resolved. Signage is posted indicating that the elevators in Thornton Hall are unavailable.

We anticipate restoring elevator service by tomorrow morning, and additional information will be provided if service is restored earlier.

Mashouf Wellness Center - Sprinkler Inspection 8/21/23 - 8/22/23 from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Facilities has scheduled a 5-year Fire Sprinkler Inspection with vendor Johnson Controls for the Mashouf Wellness Center.  This inspection will begin on Monday, 8/21/23 through Tuesday, 8/22/23 from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. This service will require the Fire Alarm System to be placed in test during the inspection and will be restored by the end of each day.

Facilities staff will be on-site accompanying the vendor and will provide access as needed. Please note: Most of this inspection will be visual and operational and will not affect the daily operations of the building.

Weekend Work | Peet's Coffee -Jetting Service

Please be advised that earlier this morning, the Facilities Plumbing shop completed a jetting service for Peet’s Coffee.  This preventative maintenance service was performed to clear the lines of any blockage and overgrown roots. There was no impact to any utilities while the lines were cleared.

Electrical Shutdown Update | Power Restored (CCSC, SHC, TCS, VCS, DC, MPH, MWH, AS, BUS, HSS, GYM, EP)

Facilities completed the load transfer today, and the power was restored to all affected buildings by 5:18 a.m. today this morning.

The following work was performed today:

  • Energized the A feed and distributed the loads between the A & B feeds.
  • Activated the SEL / RTAC automated control.
  • Restored electrical power to all affected buildings.

The SEL / RTAC automated control system provides a back-up electrical feed by providing additional power if one feed is lost.  Facilities has been monitoring and addressing any electrical related issues as a result of this power outage, and the impact to the campus has been minimal.

Hensil Hall - Industrial Hot Water shutdown | Friday, 8/4/23 at 7:00 a.m. - Saturday, 8/5/23 at 2:00 p.m.

Facilities has scheduled an industrial hot water shutdown for Friday, 8/4/23 at 7:00 a.m. that will affect the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors of Hensill Hall.  This shutdown is for emergency repairs to a leaking heat exchanger, and we anticipate restoring industrial hot water by Saturday, 8/5/23 by 2:00 p.m.

Please note: The shutdown of industrial hot water will not affect the hot water to any restrooms and is only used for devices that use 120° degree and above hot water, such as auto claves.

We apologize for the last-minute notice and appreciate your patience and understanding while we complete these urgent repairs.

Admin Exterior Window Cleaning | 8/17/23 - 8/21/23 from 7:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m.

Facilities is working with vendor Capital Building Maintenance to clean the exterior windows of the Administration Building starting Thursday, 8/17/23 through Monday, 8/21/23 between 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  The work will take place each day including the weekend. Capital Building Maintenance will have a boom lift staged in the parking lot between the Administration Building and the Library.

Please be mindful of the following:

  • All Administration building occupants must keep their windows closed during the dates and times listed above.
  • Due to wet conditions, please exercise caution when walking around the building’s perimeter. Signs will be posted in the areas where work is taking place.

Please be advised that Facilities has scheduled an electrical-shutdown for Sunday 8/6/23 at 9:00 a.m. for approximately 10-15 minutes. This shutdown is required to complete electrical phase testing and split loads between A and B on the 12kV main switch-gear. Facilities and PG&E staff will be on-site for the duration of this testing.

The scheduled breakdown for this shutdown is as follows:

Sunday, July 23rd

1:00 p.m: Our staff will shut down all shut off valves to the domestic cold water (DCW) supply and affected building’s Fire Alarms will be placed on test mode with the exception of Manzanita Square.

2:00 p.m: Campus Plumbers will verify that no water is available. Fire Watch begins and staff will begin checking every floor every hour during the project.

Monday, July 24th

7:00 a.m: The vendor will remove and replace the backflow preventors (BFPs), each assembly will take approximately 2-3 hours each to replace.

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m: Our staff will turn DCW back on, verify no leaks, and that operation is normal. Once everything has been verified and normal operation has been confirmed, the buildings’ Fire Alarms will be placed back to normal operation.

1:00 p.m: Fire Watch will end and the project will be complete. 

This shutdown is necessary to replace the Administration & Library backflow assemblies. During the repair time, the bathrooms listed in the buildings above will be closed and unavailable for use. Signage will be posted on campus bathroom doors as a reminder and MS, ADM, LIB, BUS, CA, FA, & CCSC building occupants must use alternate restrooms in other campus buildings while the shutdown occurs.

Facilities Fire & Life Safety Manager David Abordo has set-up Fire Watch coverage for the buildings listed above during the shutdown period, and staff assigned will be inspecting every floor in each listed building at 1 hour intervals and logging their findings.

Please note: Once the water has been restored, we anticipate there may be some lingering water pressure issues and slight discoloration for 1-2 days, which is normal and will clear up with additional water consumption.

Re-Opening of Parking Garage Lot 20 Roof Walkway

The Lot 20 bridge serves as a crucial link, connecting different areas of our campus and enabling convenient accessible access to various buildings on campus. A non-slip surface coating has been installed to the Lot 20 bridge that will enhance this safe and accessible route for all pedestrians. *UPDATE* - HSS - Emergency Domestic Cold Water & Central Heating Shutdown

Facilities has scheduled abatement work with vendor KM106 for tomorrow, 7/11/23 at approximately 8:00 a.mKM106 will start the abatement process on the 3rd floor hallway of HSS by installing containment sheets, and air monitoring devices.  This process includes dropping the ceiling lid, and removing and testing all materials.  We anticipate the abatement and testing to take approximately 2 days to complete. Please note: HSS 301 – HSS 306 will be blocked off and access to these locations will be unavailable for (2) days during this abatement work.

Once KM106 has completed the abatement process, Facilities BSE staff will pressurize the system to investigate and locate the source of the leak, source parts, and make repairs as necessary.  Additional information will be provided once available.

HSS - Emergency Domestic Cold Water & Central Heating Shutdown

Facilities has discovered a leak in the 3rd floor of HSS Building and has shut down domestic cold water and central heating to the HSS Building effective immediately.  This shutdown is necessary to isolate the leak and make repairs, as necessary.

Due to this unforeseen issue, the restrooms in the HSS Building are also closed immediately until repairs are completed. The following restrooms are available for use during this shutdown for the HSS Building:

Crane Work - Fine Arts - Wednesday June 28, 2023 from 7:00 am - 12:00 pm

Facilities is working on-site with vendors TK Elevator and Bigge Crane to remove and replace elevator machine equipment on the roof of Fine Arts. The crane will be staged between Cesar Chavez Student Center and Creative Arts on the East-side of Fine Arts.  This work will take place on Thursday, June 28th, 2023, from 7:00 am – 12:00 pm. Facilities has partnered with Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) to obtain the proper permits needed.  

The following areas will be blocked off during the duration of this work:

  • The walkway between the Library and Creative Arts near the bridge.
  • Fine Arts Coppola Theatre side near Cesar Chavez Student Center and the Library

Please note that the East and North Side of Fine Arts and Creative Arts will also need to be evacuated for the duration of this work.

Campus and Facilities staff will be working on-site to assist with the evacuation process, and this crane work will not proceed until we are safe to do so.

Parking Garage Lot 20 Roof Walkway Project 6/28/23 - 7/12/23

Facilities is working with a 3rd party contractor Western Roofing to re-coat the Lot 20 Bridge roof walkway to provide a non-slip surface and to increase the safety for pedestrian traffic.  This work is scheduled for 2 weeks from June 28, 2023 through July 12, 2023, and the roof walkway will be closed and unavailable during this scheduled work. Pedestrians may use the stairs at the Ground Floor under the bridge to reach the main campus and we ask everyone to be mindful of any posted signage.

This shutdown will affect the domestic-hot water in almost all campus buildings; however, we anticipate the impact to campus will be minimal due to the duration of the shutdown.

Please be advised: Facilities has partnered with Parking and Transportation to begin a restriping project for the Lot 19/20 parking garage and North and South State Drive parking spaces.  Facilities has scheduled work with 3rd party contractors SBAY and 7M General Engineering who are scheduled to work from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm on the following dates listed below.  We anticipate the restriping project should be completed near the end of July, and we will provide additional updates if necessary:

Road Closures (Graduation Ceremonies) - Parking & Transportation 5/25/23 - 5/27/23

Our colleagues in Parking & Transportation are advising of the following public parking restrictions and road closures on campus due to graduation ceremonies in Cox Stadium:

  • Thursday, May 25, 2023 through Saturday, May 27, 2023 (Public Parking Restrictions): The SSB access road will be closed to prevent vehicles from parking in the red zones; however, campus vehicles may still pass through the barricades.
  • Thursday, May 25, 2023  (Road Closure): Lot 6 access roads near Cox Stadium will be closed. For travel to upper campus, take state drive towards SSB near 5 corners.

We ask that campus vehicles be mindful of the signage and to be cautious and aware of active pedestrian foot traffic during these dates.

Admin Lot 1 Basement Sliding Doors | Out of service

Please be advised: The Administration Basement Lot 1 sliding doors are out of service until further notice.  Facilities has scheduled service with a 3rd party vendor UCAL to assess the repairs needed on Wednesday, 4/26/23 at approximately 7:00 am.  We do not have an estimated date of repairs at this time, but additional information will be provided once available.

Facilities has partnered with the Division of Campus Safety, and the sliding doors will remain open during business hours to allow for ADA access.  The doors will be secured in the evenings.

Campus & Housing Fire Alarm Monitoring system outage

The UPD Dispatch (TSW) Fire Alarm Panel monitoring system has malfunctioned, and we have lost communication to monitor all Fire related issues for the Campus & Housing buildings listed below.  All Fire Alarm devices such as (smoke detectors, sprinklers, alarm panels, pull stations, etc) are still operational, but are only communicating at a local level. Facilities has scheduled emergency repairs with a 3rd party vendor (JCI) Johnson Controls and will provide additional information once available.

Facilities has partnered with the University Police Department, Facilities Trades staff, and a 3rd party security vendor to assist with 24-7 campus-wide Fire Watch until Monday, 4/24/23.  All staff assigned to fire watch coverage have been instructed to walk all buildings and check for any signs of smoke or fire and are required to document hourly and report their findings.

2023 Campus Fire Extinguisher Annual Inspections

Facilities will be conducting annual fire extinguisher inspections with vendor (Ace Fire Equipment & Service) to check for outdated fire extinguishers and replace as needed.

Electrical Shutdown | Humanities, Friday 3/24/23 from 7:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Capital Planning Design and Construction (CPDC) has scheduled an electrical power shutdown for Humanities on Friday, 3/24/23 from 7:00 am – 1:30 pm.  This shutdown is required to install temporary breakers for power usage for the West Campus Green project.  Facilities staff will be on-site and will assist CPDC and the contractor as needed. The contractor assigned to this job is McCarthy, and will make every attempt to minimize the disruption as much as possible.  Facilities Fire & Life Safety Manager David Abordo has set-up Fire Watch coverage for Humanities during the shutdown period, and staff assigned will be inspecting every floor at 30-minute intervals and logging their findings.

Please be advised that a domestic cold-water shutdown has been scheduled for Sunday, 3/19/23 at 2:00 pm through Monday, 3/20/23 at 2:00 pm for the following buildings on campus:

Campus Road Closure *Update* | Inclement Weather advisory

Facilities Grounds crews have mobilized a tree removal vendor as of 1:30 pm this afternoon, and they are assisting with the removal of two large trees near the GYM and Hensill Hall.  We anticipate having both areas clear by 6:00 pm today.  Further tree work is scheduled to be performed on several trees across campus, throughout the rest of the week.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation as we actively work to safely remove debris and downed trees.  With the high wind advisory, and the possibility of further downed trees, we ask that the campus community be aware of your surroundings and remain vigilant.

GYM | Domestic Hot Water Shutdown | 3/1/23 - 3/2/23

This shutdown is required to allow building service engineers to repair a control valve for the heat exchanger that controls the temperature to the showers. We anticipate restoring domestic hot water service by the end of the day on Thursday, 3/2/23.

Crane Work - Today, 2/22/23 - Fine Arts - Tree Removal

Facilities is working on-site with vendor Sheedy Crane to remove a downed tree at Fine Arts.  The crane will be staged between Café Rosso and Fine Arts and will be working on the north-side of the building. Facilities has reached out to EHS, and the FA building coordinator to assist with evacuating a portion of the building, where the crane work will take place. 

The crane work will begin once a portion of Fine Arts has been evacuated, and we anticipate this will take a few hours for the tree removal.

A section of pipe has been replaced, and this portion of the heating hot water loop project with contractor SBAY is now complete.  Please note that this is part of a multi-phase project to address the campus hot water loop system, and further troubleshooting is required for additional repairs. We will send notifications and updates for future road/access closures as needed.

Lot 20 Elevator No. 1 | Back in service

Please be advised that the South Parking Lot 20 Elevator No. 1 has been restored and is back in service.  TKE elevator fixed an electrical issue with a power unit (tank).

January 3, 2023: Campus Central Heating and Hot Water Shutdown - CY, SCI, HSS, GYM, EP

In preparation to repair a portion of the campus hot water loop system, Facilities has scheduled a central heating and hot water shutdown for Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 7 a.m. until further notice.

The following buildings will not have central heating or hot water:

  • Corporation Yard
  • Science
  • HSS
  • Gym
  • Ethnic Studies & Psychology

Facilities has scheduled a 3rd party contractor to respond to campus first thing tomorrow morning to excavate and perform repairs to the hot water loop system. Please note there is a strong possibility the central plant will need to be shut down completely, and this will affect additional buildings. Facilities will provide updates as soon as they are available.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.
